Prey In Sight

Hunt Page 1

The above images are showing the progression of a page. The first image is the pencil page, you can see not too much changes form here on but there are subtle differences, things added and taken out, the second image is an untouched scan of the first page with just my inks, once I had the ink on I could see what was missing and what I wanted to add in or take out. I took out the moon as I thought it looked a bit cheap, and added in some extra buildings with the Jesus saves sign. Notice the changes in the consistency of the black ink, and the flatness of the bald on the page. This is down to the pens that I use, I have used plain ink before but it takes a lot longer and is prone to smudging.

The last image is the same image but just with a few simple adjustments on photoshop, all the main work is done before hand but by simply multiplying the layers it gives me that nice crisp black finish and pops off the page.

To begin with I had to have an idea of where this story was going to be set. My first idea was to set it in my home town of Belfast, this would give me landmarks, real places and references, which sounds good but after reflecting upon this I came to realise this would also limit me as well. Location wise I wouldn't have the feel that I would want to show, so I made the decision to set the story in a fictional world, this will allow me to take reference from many places from around the globe. Bumttown for example is based around Los Angeles skid row area, run down and forgotten about, left to decay with the decaying society, alcohol is, drug addicts etc. With the internet you can find plenty of reference material so that isn't a problem.

The next step was a realisation of the characters in my head, so begins the character design. For the main character I had a pretty good idea of how I wanted him to look, mid 40's but looks a bit older, hard life and seen maybe thing that have affected him which I wanted to show on his face, lets just say he doesn't smile a lot.

I had the back story worked out and needed a wife character, I knew I wanted her to be a femme fatale character, stunningly beautiful, sexy and could bend a mans will with ease, or possibly just the raise of an eye brow. I had trouble visualising her, well getting her down on paper, so I decided to base the character on a real person. I won't say who but she has all the right qualities.

The Wife.

Above is an early sketch for the wife character, I wanted her to have a seventies look to her, a Farrah Fawcett look, but with the pearls showing she likes the finer things in life. I decided that she looked a bit fragile and I wanted her to be more feisty looking. But the original design reminded me of someone. She wasn't quite right but this gave me the idea to base her on the actress/character that I eventually ended up using.

The Wife - Added colour to give a sexy yet dangerous feel.

In the story line Dt. Fox and Mrs Fox have two children, these I am still working on. With a possible third child involved as well, but this is still being worked out. They are a complicated family, with the Wife having remarried soon after the divorce, which was brought on by circumstances which will be revealed as the story continues. The new husband is a very different character to Dt. Fox a safe clean living guy, a bit of a wet blanket. But they did have some happy times together.
